Wright, Jackson & Sharpton: The Role They Played In Getting Obama Elected

[During Obama's campaign], Reverends Wright, Sharpton and Jackson were in a dilemma. They were three men caught in a web of their own historical press clippings. Even Dirty Harry knew that a man’s gotta know his own limitations. They had no choice, really. It was either distance themselves from Barack Obama, or cost him the Presidency.

Reverend Wright was a firebrand noted for his take-no-prisoners rhetoric from the pulpit. He was the kind of inner-self black spirit that African Americans only surrender to in audience with other like-minded African Americans. He was the Black Power salute of contemporary black dialog – respectably vocal, but never allowed to escape beyond the inside breast pocket of a Brooks Brothers suit. Upper middle class black folks listened to him on Sunday mornings to make more palatable the glass ceilings they had to navigate Monday mornings at work.

Reverend Al Sharpton, on the other hand, had become the quintessential civil rights leader of the 21st Century, in the tradition of Frederick Douglass – "agitate, agitate, agitate." In the white community he had become a caricature of himself, but his gift was the ability to cut through the bullshit and tell it like it is or, shall I say, how he thought it was. He brought the cameras and the microphones which, in some cases, were all that was needed to affect surface level Change.

Jesse Jackson, over the recent years, had lost more credibility than he had gained, but in the eyes of his detractors, he still represented the civil rights camp - heir apparent to the Martin Luther King, Jr. legacy in the absence of any King Family member who wanted the torch more than a movie role. Reverend Jackson’s civil rights cavalcade always seemed to set up shop just outside of operational government and therefore seemed doomed to forever knock on the door of viability... from the wrong side.

In early Spring of 2008, as Barack Obama’s bid for the presidency began to approach the rarified air of serious money, there must have been an unspoken meeting of the minds among these men. It was a moment when all four had to realize that The Black Agenda had to be set aside in favor of The American Agenda. This had to happen in order for Obama to reach unprecedented heights in the presidential campaign. In was like members of the old Negro Leagues bidding farewell to Jackie Robinson as he cleared his locker. It was never "Why him?" They knew he had to move forward so that others could move forward after him, and it was time for them to step aside.

Barack Obama would have never disavowed Reverend Wright had it not become evident that Wright’s rhetoric had the potential of slicing and dicing his campaign. So Wright intentionally pushed the issue. And he pushed it so far to the radical left that Obama had no choice but to respond emphatically.

Reverend Sharpton did his part by holding off on his endorsement of Barack Obama for as long as possible, before his motives were beginning to be questioned by his own constituency. Thus he helped to move Obama a tad further to the center.

Jesse Jackson’s particular stroke of genius was to enlist the aid of the enemy - FOX News Network. He knew it would only work once, and in order for it to work, it had to be Fox News, one of the most racist new organizations in the world. They would never not broadcast an apparent rift between two newsworthy black men. Jackson made the comments to a guest before an interview on "Fox & Friends," whispering that Obama was "talking down to black people" and that he (Jackson) wanted to "cut his nuts off." FOX jumped on this with all four feet. Not only did Jackson not ask FOX to hold back the tape, he went on CNN to apologize for his comments, thus ensuring that the tape would be broadcast. It played perfectly on the evening news. Jesse set himself up to take the hit, and even his own son, Jesse Jackson, Jr, an Obama staffer, had to denounce his father’s comments. How much more real does it get? Jesse played FOX like a cheap pawnshop trumpet. Here is a man who has been in public life for almost 50 years. He had been scrutinized by Hoover, wire-tapped by the FBI in the King era. And we’re supposed to believe that he forgot he was on a hot microphone... at the FOX News Network, no less?

Jeremiah Wright, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson fell on their swords so that Barack Obama would have a greater audience at center court. Someday a filmmaker will study the screenplay, and even she won’t believe it. Rod Serling wouldn’t believe it, either, and he knew something about irony.

Obama Says "No" To His Celebrity Supporters

It's probably not surprising that a lot of Barack Obama's biggest celebrity supporters -- both from Hollywood and the music world -- were clamoring for VIP invites to tonight's big rally in Grant Park.

While the Democratic nominee and his staff are thankful for both the big checks and outspoken expressions of support from all those famous faces, I've learned from a key Obama insider that a number of big-time boosters have been told politely -- but very firmly -- to stay away tonight.

Reportedly, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Sean ''Diddy'' Combs, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Ben Affleck are among those advised to skip the Chicago festivities and focus on attending the expected Obama inauguration in January.

''There really only needs to be one star in Grant Park, and that's Barack,'' said the source, a high-profile elected official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, since he's not authorized to speak for the campaign on this issue.

''There will be plenty of time for a new President Obama to be surrounded by famous fans, all hopeful about a new administration.''

• That said, one of Obama's biggest star supporters -- Oprah Winfrey -- has confirmed that she will be on hand in Grant Park tonight, and it's assumed she will join the candidate and his family and true inner circle in his suite at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Wacker.

As we know -- no one says ''No'' to Oprah!

I'm sure Obama's celebrity supporters will understand, this should be a night for the ordinary folks. I'm sure they will have front row seats at the inauguration. I was kind of hesitant to post this article because the votes are currently being counted and Barack hasn't been declared a winner yet. I hope this pre-planning for a victory party doesn't jinx Obama.

This election has been as historic as its candidates and their surrogates have been retarded. The number of milestones crossed is rivaled only by the number of times someone said or did something jaw-droppingly stupid. Herewith is a quick rundown of the five stupidest campaign trail blunders, according to our own dumbass opinions.

1. Levi agreed to marry Bristol

Knocking up the Governor's daughter is one notch on the belt that any cocksman as skilled as Levi Johnston would be a fool to pass up. When a young man as sexually and sensually alive as Levi manages something like that at the young age of 17, it's clearly the beginning of his career as a playboy, and he's not looking for a chance to settle down.

For the sake of the campaign, though, he was asked to make an honorable woman out of our Bris-Bris, and he was surely bribed with promises of the White House helping him out with his hockey career or his country music novelty song career or whatever the hell a redneck dropout playboy like Levi would want to do with his life. Now that the White House dream is receding though, Mama Palin will surely not let Levi back out of the deal. 2012 is right around the corner, and she's going to make sure he doesn't walk out on her little girl. The future of the far right depends on it.

2. Those two weeks of Democratic pants-shitting after Sarah Palin joined McCain's ticket

Holy crap! Remember when we all thought it was over? Just because someone's Mom got onstage and started shitting on community organizers for 40 minutes? This was more evidence than ever that the Democratic Party has the self-esteem of a battered woman. We know we're going to get our asses kicked, and we just assume that's the way it's supposed to be. Hopefully Obama will win big enough to give the party a little boost in the confidence department.

3. Biden delivered a speech titled, "The End of the World Will Occur Exactly Six Months From January 20th, 2009"

Yes, we all love making fun of Mr. Foot in the Mouth, but what the hell was he even trying to say there? If you just wandered in in the middle you'd assume you were at a book club discussion of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road." It's not gaffes or "rhetorical flourishes." In Biden's case, it has to be pain pills. That's the only way to explain it.

4. Obama revealed his closely guarded communist agenda to an unlicensed plumber he happened to bump into in the street

Everyone knows that Democrats are the party of Karl Marx and medical marijuana. But you're not supposed to say it out loud! And to a guy like Joe the Plumber no less? If we saw Joe The Plumber in the street we'd assume he's coming to beat us with a tire iron because we dress queer. We certainly wouldn't stop and tell him that we plan to end capitalism. Smarten up Barack!

5. Ashley Todd scratched a backwards B in her face when a backwards O would have been much more convincing

Of all the stupid things that are wrong with that Ashley Todd scam, this is the one that we just can't get our heads around. Why not an O? It's immediate. It's easy to carve. And you can't do it effing backwards! If it had been an O, we predict that story would have stayed alive through the whole weekend. Instead, they picked it apart within 18 hours. Crazy is one thing, but crazy and stupid? That's just bad politics.

Bill Clinton's entire primary season performance - Dennis Kucinich admitting that he'd seen a UFO during one of the debates - Rudy 9-11's decision to bypass all the early primaries and focus on Florida - Hillary ignoring all the caucus states - McCain's economy strong/economy in crisis, suspending campaign/but not really, cancelling debate/debating anyway week of absurdity - and really the STUPIDIST MOMENT EVER: Choosing Sarah Palin in the first place.

Ba-Rock Star: Obama draws historic crowd in St. Louis, MO

Wow! Have there ever been a politician in America that generated so much excitement? Today in St. Louis, One hundred thousand people turned out to a rally held by Barack Obama the Rock Star. America has a lot riding on the next presidential election so I'm happy to see that people are engaged, I just hope they make the right decision.







One reason McCain picked Sarah Palin was to try to compete with the celebrity of Barack Obama and to generate some excitement for his campaign. So if that's the case Sarah, you got a lot of work to do beeotch!

Jesse Jackson: 'Zionists Control US, to Lose Clout Under Obama'

As U.S. President, Democratic candidate Barack Obama would fundamentally change American policy in the Middle East and keep "Zionists" from controlling it, civil rights activist and Baptist minister Jesse Jackson was quoted as saying Tuesday.

The quote appears in an article written in the New York Post by Amir Taheri, who spoke with Jackson in Evian, France, where Jackson participated in the World Policy Forum.

Jackson said that the most important change in the U.S. administration's policy under Barack Obama would occur in the Middle East, where "decades of putting Israel's interests first" – as Jackson is quoted – would end.

"Jackson believes that, although 'Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades' remain strong, they'll lose a great deal of their clout when Barack Obama enters the White House," the Post article continued. It is not clear from the report what part of Jackson's comments was made before the World Policy Forum and what part was made in a conversation with Taheri.

Obama's campaign responded to Jackson's statements Tuesday by stressing that "Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. is not an adviser to the Obama campaign and is therefore in no position to interpret or share Barack Obama's views on Israel and foreign policy."

And the Next Stunt: A shotgun wedding?

I take everything I read about American politics in the British papers with a grain of salt. But giving what we've seen so far, I can't say I'd be surprised if the moral jalopy that is the McCain-Palin Straight Talk Express sunk us even further into farce with something like this. Brace yourselves. Next week could be another crazy one in the McCain campaign.

The "I'm suspending my campaign" to go back to Washington stunt didn't work to move last night's debate to next week which would have moved the VP debate. And in the debate, Obama proved to many, especially the undecideds, what we already knew. The guy is ready to be president. And McCain?

McCain has got to counter Obama's debate bounce and get Palin out of the debate or off the ticket all together. A debate performance equal to her interviews could push McCain's numbers down in the 30s and Obama's up in the 50s. McCain could be sandbaging us with Palin's horrific interview performance. NOT. The thought of Obama over 50 and McCain in the 30s will force McCain to go to his bag of tricks once again.

The fact that Palin wasn't the post-debate surrogate for McCain speaks volumes. Even McCain's PR people can put an intelligent sentence together about life and world issues. It's crazy to think that Palin is the nominee for the second highest office in the land, but can't be trusted to speak for and about her potential boss. Unbelievable.

If last night's debate and Biden's post debate performance are any indication, we actually may not hear from Palin again. We all should feel for her. McCain has opened her up to scrutiny and a spotlight that she couldn't comprehend. Her performance in interviews? Imagine how she might handle the give and take and follow up questions in a debate that weren't in her talking points. She can't even get through debate prep.

McCain has got to change the subject again. That's all he knows. There is no strategy. There is no message. Just gimmicks. And Palin is probably the first human gimmick in politics. She needs to regain her dignity and respect and go home.

Expect some kind of announcement this week. Don't underestimate McCain's desperation.

McCain Never Fails To Play The POW Card

McCain plays the victim every time he mentions his POW record in Vietnam. He appeals to our sympathy and collective guilt and this is supposed to make us all view him as a war hero - why? I thought heroism had to do with eluding capture, managing not to get shot down, turning it all around and sticking it to the enemy in the end. At least that's what Hollywood war movies (e.g., "Pearl Harbor") with their swelling scores and tearjerking finales, as well as every war hawks' idealized version of heroism teaches. McCain's actual POW record is so far from this ideal, yet we continue to have this version of McCain as the great old American hero forced down our throats day in and day out, by not only the MSM, but by his appeasing political enemies as well.

How does losing 5 U.S. Navy aircraft (4 not in combat), an estimated 20 hours of flight time over enemy territory, ending in the loss of the 5th airplane, and sitting in prison for 5 years, somehow qualify this wizened old Drama Queen American hero status? Why does his high-profile birthright as the son of a Navy Admiral and his giving up military information in exchange for much needed access to surgeons always get lost in the glamor of the hero myth? How is it that sitting another year in prison after refusing a repatriation deal make him more of a hero? Wouldn't he have done a greater service to his fellow POWs on the inside, by working to get them released from the outside?

John McCain's stubborn refusal to look Senator Obama in the eye in Mississippi last night is as good a metaphor as any for his failed foreign policy and short combat records. As a failed Navy pilot, he flew above, but never looked his enemy in the eye in Vietnam. He jumped on the Iraq war bandwagon without ever looking his enemy in the eye. And he'll gladly continue Bush's failed policy of refusing any contact with our enemies while beating the drums for war (with Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Venezuela, or anyone else that dares to assert their right to self determination).

All of this refusal of John McCain to face his enemies eye to eye makes me wonder what he is afraid they'll see if he looks them in the eye. I wonder if it's that he's afraid they'll see the same frightened youth that hid behind his father's name instead of being left to die like so many nameless fatally wounded true American heroes in Vietnam.

Today's AP story wasn't exactly about the so-called "Bradley Effect" or "Wilder Effect," a popular theory in the 1980s and 1990s that posited that some white Americans lie to pollsters claiming they will support African-American candidates but vote then against them in the secrecy of the ballot box.

The theory - if it was true back then - has been very thoroughly disproved in recent years, and today we'll walk you through all the documentation you need to debunk it when asked about it by others.

But with the McCain-Palin ticket sinking in the polls, and the financial crisis sucking the oxygen out of the culture war "issues" on all sides, with the economy now front and center as the dominant campaign issue, we're hearing increasing mention of the so-called "Bradley Effect," the so-called "Wilder Effect," the so-called "Bradley-Wilder Effect" (all names for the same 20th century theory).

And now, the Associated Press and its unethical reporter Ron Fournier are transparently attempting to turn the November election (and, if their attempted arson is successful, its aftermath for years to come) into a wedge to divide, polarize and set back race relations in the United States of America more than four decades.

Everybody take a deep breath and repeat after me: The race card is not working. It's not going to work. And we're not going to take the bait being dangled out in front of us by racially prejudiced provocateurs like Fournier: he wants us to spread his gasoline to make his arson fire bigger; we're going to hose water on it - and on him - instead.

McCain Plays the Race Card

Since McCain has falling behind in the polls it seems he has resorted to that old republican party tactic of playing the race card. Check out his new ad that will be playing nation wide in the coming days:



Even the Times Online noted the subtle racism in this add:

This is hardly subtle: Sinister images of two black men, followed by one of a vulnerable-looking elderly white woman.

Let me stipulate: Obama's Fannie Mae connections are completely fair game. But this ad doesn't even mention a far more significant tie--that of Jim Johnson, the former Fannie Mae chairman who had to resign as head of Obama's vice presidential search team after it was revealed he got a sweetheart deal on a mortgage from Countrywide Financial. Instead, it relies on a fleeting and tenuous reference in a Washington Post Style section story to suggest that Obama's principal economic adviser is former Fannie Mae Chairman Frank Raines. Why? One reason might be that Johnson is white; Raines is black.

And the image of the victim doesn't seem accidental either, given the fact that older white women are a key swing constituency in this election.

Was the Sarah Palin pick a flop?

I think John McCain may be having a few regrets over his VP pick. Sarah Palin started out as an instant hit on the Republican ticket but over the past few days it is beginning to show that she could be a liability when it comes to Independents, Moderate Republicans and so called Reagan Democrats. Within 11 days her negative rating went from 35 up to 46 and her positive rating went from 52 down to 41.

Racism and the Race

This is supposed to be the Democrats’ year of destiny. Bush is hobbling out of office, the economy is in the toilet, voters are sick of the war and the party’s wunderkind candidate is raking in money hand over fist.

So why is the presidential race a statistical dead heat? The pundits have offered a host of reasons, but one in particular deserves more exploration: racism.

Barack Obama’s candidacy has shed some light on the extremes of racism in America — how much has dissipated (especially among younger people) and how much remains.

According to a July New York Times/CBS News poll, when whites were asked whether they would be willing to vote for a black candidate, 5 percent confessed that they would not. That’s not so bad, right? But wait. The pollsters then rephrased the question to get a more accurate portrait of the sentiment. They asked the same whites if most of the people they knew would vote for a black candidate. Nineteen percent said that those they knew would not. Depending on how many people they know and how well they know them, this universe of voters could be substantial. That’s bad.

Welcome to the murky world of modern racism, where most of the open animus has been replaced by a shadowy bias that is difficult to measure. As Obama gently put it in his race speech, today’s racial “resentments aren’t always expressed in polite company.” However, they can be — and possibly will be — expressed in the privacy of the voting booth.

If the percentage of white voters who cannot bring themselves to vote for a black candidate were only 15 percent, that would be more than all black voters combined. (Coincidentally, it also would be more than all voters under 24 years old.) That amounts to a racial advantage for John McCain.

And this sentiment stretched across ideological lines. Just as many white independents as Republicans said that most of the people they knew would not vote for a black candidate, and white Democrats were not far behind. Also, remember that during the Democratic primaries, up to 20 percent of white voters in some states said that the race of the candidate was important to them. Few of those people voted for the black guy.

Some might say that turnabout is fair play, citing the fact that 89 percent of blacks say they plan to vote for Obama. That level of support represents a racial advantage for him, too, right? Not necessarily. Blacks overwhelmingly vote Democratic in the general election anyway. According to CNN exit polls John Kerry got 88 percent of the black vote in 2004.

Think racism isn’t a major factor in this election? Think again.

With Obama, a little uncertainty

You may not like the article below, but it does make some decent points. Even if some of them make McCain look good, and Obama look iffy.

I must admit the only thing I too know about Obama doing that I admire, was give a spectacular speech once. He even made me believe he was anti-war. But all the points he scored with me there he has since lost with his FISA betrayal, and his talk that he will continue to war-monger and throw infinite cash at the Pentagon much the same as Bush or McCain after elected. And he might not do much towards universal healthcare, either.

No, I'm not voting McCain. I preferred him over Bush in 2000 as the Republican candidate, especially when he bad-mouthed the Pat Robertson bunch. But since then he's turned completely around and kissed their ass.

I prefer Obama simply in the hope he'll be a better President than he says he will at the moment (yeah, that sounds dumb, but we ain't got many choices here, do we?). Where my vote is concerned, McCain is doomed for becoming Pat Robertson and the GOP's water boy, plus the real-life catastrophe his Republican party has made of America over the past 8 years. We pretty much KNOW terrible things are going to happen if the Republicans retain the office. With Obama, there's a least a little more uncertainty about how terrible things will get.

Obama's problem is many progressives like me — the bedrock of Democratic support — have had Obama puncture our hopes of him like a child's balloon, since getting the nomination. We're no longer as enthusiastic and willing to talk him up as before. When we go to the polls, we'll be hanging our heads and muttering "Goddamn it, I wish I had somebody better to vote for." That feeling could easily translate into lots of voters switching to a third party candidate (as helped Bush win in 2000). Or simply not showing up at the polls at all (as may also have helped Bush in 2000).

One of the strategies Republicans love most to use in elections is to dampen down voter enthusiasm for Democratic candidates, in order to reduce Democratic turnout. Since capturing the nomination, Obama has been doing that all on his own.

To me, that seems awfully stupid of him. But maybe he's really smart, like some say. In that case, maybe it's not stupidity on his part, but plain old arrogance or egotism instead.

Whichever it is, the end result could be the same: a Republican win in 2008.

McCain Adviser: Raise Retirement Age To 70

It's coming.

According to Phil Gramm, senior economic adviser to John McCain, the retirement age will have to be raised.

Gramm told the Washington Times that a bipartisan deal might include raising the retirement age to 70 over 30 years, indexing the benefits of wealthier retirees to inflation rather than the more generous wage rate, and creating a private account program for younger workers.

This means that if you are 40 and under, you will be working as much as 5 years longer than your parents did.

There you have it folks, Republicans want you to work as slaves for corporations until you drop dead. What a plan, if you're dead then the government doesn't have to pay Social Security. Let's not forget administrations for decades have borrowed money from the Social Security trust fund, if they put back the money they've borrowed instead of blowing in their oil wars, there wouldn't be a problem with Social Security and we could all look forward to retiring at the age of 65 with full benefits.

McCains economic advisor says Americans are a nation of whiners

This was supposed to be John McCain's week to re-re-launch his campaign, this time with a tightly focused message about the economy and how he plans to fix it. He had a nicely staged debut in Denver, even if the experts quickly demanded to know how he could preserve George Bush's tax cuts, stay in Iraq and yet balance the federal budget by 2013. Details, details! Still, McCain was back in the game.

Then a one-man thundercloud named Phil Gramm rained on McCain's Main Street parade.
